Russian Project 24 Battleship
Project 24 was a Soviet postwar battleship-development effort intended to move beyond the incomplete prewar capital-ship program. Designers considered very large, heavily armed ships during the period when Stalin still supported a powerful gun-armed fleet. No Project 24 battleship was completed. The program belongs to the history of unrealized Soviet naval ambitions and changing priorities, not to a class that actually fought alongside the Cold War missile fleet. The study continued after the Second World War even as aircraft and missiles were changing naval warfare. Stalin’s death and subsequent policy changes reduced support for such enormous gun ships. Project 24 therefore belongs to a transitional debate about fleet composition rather than combat deployment.
