Russian Vostok Rocket
Vostok was the Soviet program that carried the first human into space. Its launch vehicle belonged to the R-7-derived rocket family, with additional upper stages supporting orbital missions. Yuri Gagarin’s flight in April 1961 made the name internationally famous, followed by further Vostok missions including Valentina Tereshkova’s. The launcher should be distinguished from the spherical crew capsule, even though both are associated with the same pioneering spaceflight program. The rocket used clustered propulsion descended from the R-7 ballistic missile, linking early spaceflight directly with Cold War missile engineering. Vostok carried Yuri Gagarin into orbit in 1961. Launching a crew required spacecraft systems, tracking stations, recovery planning, and ground organization in addition to the conspicuous rocket itself.
