SLBM Fired
A submarine-launched ballistic missile firing represents a major development in strategic nuclear forces. Cold War navies moved from early arrangements that imposed severe launch restrictions toward missiles fired while the submarine remained submerged. Dedicated ballistic-missile submarines could patrol away from fixed land bases, complicating an opponent’s targeting problem. The launch effect itself does not identify a particular missile family, submarine class, range, or warhead configuration without further design information. Launching from beneath the surface requires the missile to leave its tube and pass through the water before continuing flight. Ballistic-missile submarines were designed around this strategic mission rather than ordinary torpedo attack. The visible launch plume represents one stage in a deterrent system dependent on patrol endurance and secure communications.
