Tillman Design Maximum Battleship IV
The Tillman ‘maximum battleship’ studies were American investigations into extraordinarily large and heavily armed capital ships during the First World War period. The Design IV family explored combinations that pushed far beyond ordinary contemporary battleship scale. None was built. Their significance lies in examining the technical, industrial, and practical limits of battleship construction rather than in a hidden operational fleet. The maximum-battleship studies examined what could be achieved if ordinary size restrictions were relaxed. Their enormous displacement, armament, and infrastructure requirements made them exercises in naval design possibilities rather than funded ships that reached construction. The Panama Canal and available docking facilities helped frame American discussion of practical maximum dimensions. A design could appear feasible on paper while requiring major changes to the shore infrastructure needed to build, maintain, and repair it.
