Description
Po-2 Russian Aircraft
The Polikarpov Po-2 began as the U-2, a simple Soviet biplane developed for training and utility work. Its modest performance did not prevent extensive use during the Second World War for liaison, transport, medical evacuation, and night harassment. Women’s night-bomber units became particularly associated with the type. Continued use after the war, including in Korea, demonstrated that a slow and uncomplicated aircraft could remain useful in missions very different from conventional fighter combat.
The simple biplane’s modest performance suited liaison, training, and low-speed operations from rough fields. Soviet night-bomber crews exploited those qualities during the Second World War, giving a basic trainer an unexpectedly durable combat reputation.
