Tosa-Class Battleship
The Japanese Tosa-class battleships were planned under Japan’s post-First World War capital-ship expansion. The Washington Naval Treaty prevented their completion as battleships. Tosa was used for tests before disposal, while Kaga was converted into an aircraft carrier. A Tosa-class battleship subject therefore depicts an uncompleted gun-ship design rather than an operational Second World War battleship class.
The two hulls reflected Japan’s ambitious eight-eight fleet plans, which aimed to maintain a powerful modern battle line. Tosa’s incomplete hull later provided a valuable target for trials of protection and underwater damage effects. Kaga’s conversion became possible under treaty provisions allowing selected capital-ship hulls to become carriers. These different outcomes connect the class to both the end of an expansionary battleship program and the growth of the carrier force that fought in the Pacific War.
