Yankee-Class Submarine
The Soviet Project 667A submarines, called Yankee class by NATO, marked a major advance in Soviet ballistic-missile submarine capability during the Cold War. Their missile arrangement and nuclear propulsion supported a strategic patrol role more comparable with contemporary American systems than earlier Soviet designs. Individual boats later underwent different conversions and changes in mission. The Yankee family should therefore be distinguished from the later Delta classes and from tactical attack submarines that carried no comparable strategic missile battery. The class expanded the Soviet sea-based ballistic-missile force during the Cold War, with missile technology shaping patrol requirements and operating areas. Individual boats later received modifications or other assignments. The original ballistic-missile configuration and specialized later conversions consequently represented different missions within the same hull lineage, with individual boats no longer sharing an identical strategic role.
