Type XI Submarine
Unbuilt proposal.
Germany’s Type XI U-boat was a prewar submarine-cruiser proposal intended to combine heavy artillery with submarine operation. Its unusual projected equipment reflected interest in long-range raiding concepts beyond the ordinary torpedo submarine. The design was not completed as an operational class. The submarine-cruiser idea attempted to extend the commerce-raiding possibilities of a boat by adding a much heavier surface-gun capability. Such ambitions introduced problems of size, cost, handling, and exposure while firing. Projected armament included four 127 mm guns in two twin mounts, alongside torpedo tubes. An Arado Ar 231 reconnaissance floatplane was intended to extend observation beyond the submarine’s immediate horizon. The Kriegsmarine ordered boats before the war, but the project was abandoned as other submarine requirements took priority.
