U.K. Resolution-Class Submarine
Britain’s Resolution class introduced a nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine force armed with Polaris during the Cold War. It provided a concealed, mobile component of the national nuclear deterrent, shifting responsibility for that mission away from dependence solely on aircraft. The boats’ work centered on deterrent patrols rather than conventional attack-submarine missions. They entered service in the 1960s and were replaced by the Vanguard class in the 1990s. A modern-war-only label would obscure their Cold War origins, while the later Trident missile system had no to their original Polaris configuration. HMS Resolution conducted the first British Polaris operational patrol in 1968, beginning continuous deterrent operations.
