UK Supermarine Seafire Fighter
The Supermarine Seafire adapted the Spitfire fighter for operations from aircraft carriers. Naval equipment such as an arrestor hook, and later folding-wing arrangements on suitable versions, supported that role. Its strong flying performance came with handling and structural challenges imposed by carrier landings. Seafires served during the Second World War and afterward, illustrating the compromises involved when a successful land fighter is converted for the demanding environment of naval aviation. Adapting the Spitfire for naval use required an arresting hook and other modifications, with folding wings introduced on suitable versions. Narrow undercarriage and limited forward visibility complicated deck handling. The resulting aircraft offered valuable fighter performance, but operating from a moving carrier imposed stresses quite different from those encountered on a land airfield.
