U.S. Iowa-class Commando Carrier
Unbuilt proposal.
Proposals to convert Iowa-class battleships into commando ships explored using their large, fast hulls for helicopters, landing forces, and naval gunfire support. Such schemes belonged to postwar debates over amphibious warfare and the future of battleships. They were not completed operational conversions. The commando-carrier concept must also be distinguished from later hybrid battlecarrier proposals centered on STOVL aircraft. Advocates sought to combine protected gunfire support with the rapid movement of troops by helicopter or landing craft. The large hull offered possibilities, but age, manpower demands, cost, and the availability of purpose-built amphibious ships weakened the case. A commando conversion therefore remained a debated use of existing battleships rather than an established naval operating type.
