VBCI Infantry Fighting Vehicle

The French VBCI is a wheeled infantry fighting vehicle developed to provide protected mobility and supporting fire for mechanized infantry. Its eight-wheel layout and cannon-armed turret distinguish it from the older VAB troop carrier. It entered service in the modern period and has supported French overseas operations, with command and other family configurations differing from the basic fighting vehicle.

Developed by French industry to replace the AMX-10P in major infantry formations, the vehicle entered service during the late 2000s. Its main fighting version uses a 25-millimeter cannon, while the command version supports headquarters functions. French deployments included Afghanistan and Mali, exposing the design to varied climates and operational demands. Wheeled mobility favors road movement and expeditionary support, while protection and weight remain important trade-offs. Later changes reflect experience with mines, improvised explosive devices, communications requirements, and the growing complexity of mechanized infantry operations.
