Yasen-Class Submarine

Russia’s Yasen class, designated Project 885 and its improved developments, was created as a nuclear-powered attack and cruise-missile submarine family. It combines missions against ships, submarines, and land targets within a large modern hull. Development stretched across the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rebuilding of Russian naval procurement. Different boats represent changes in design and equipment, so the family should not be reduced to one unchanged configuration or confused with ballistic-missile submarines. The design emphasizes a multi-role nuclear attack-submarine mission, including weapons for underwater, surface, and land targets. Development straddled the collapse of the Soviet Union, complicating construction schedules. Later boats reflect changes within the program, so the original lead ship should be distinguished from the modified production configuration.
