U.S. Oregon City-class Heavy Cruiser
The Oregon City class was an American heavy-cruiser design developed from the Baltimore class during the Second World War. A more compact superstructure and revised funnel arrangement improved firing arcs and reduced interference with anti-aircraft weapons. The completed ships arrived too late to take part in the war’s major campaigns. Their postwar careers therefore differ from those of the earlier Baltimores, despite the close family resemblance. The class retained a conventional heavy-cruiser gun armament as naval technology increasingly turned toward missiles. The class’s more compact upper works were a practical refinement rather than a change to an entirely different gun caliber. Its late completion is central to understanding the absence of Second World War combat honors.
