M1128 Stryker Mobile Gun System

The M1128 Mobile Gun System mounted a one-hundred-and-five-millimeter gun on the American Stryker wheeled vehicle family. It was intended to provide direct fire in support of infantry, not replace the Abrams as a main battle tank. Its automatic loading arrangement and integration challenges illustrate the compromises involved in placing a large gun on a mobile wheeled chassis.

The vehicle emerged from the effort to equip Stryker brigade combat teams with a family sharing common automotive support. Its gun could engage bunkers, walls, and other targets that ordinary infantry weapons struggled to defeat. A low-profile unmanned turret separated the crew from the loading mechanism. Operational service exposed maintenance and reliability concerns, while the vehicle lacked the protection and ammunition flexibility of a heavy tank. The Army subsequently retired the fleet, distinguishing its limited service career from the continuing use of other Stryker variants.
